Well this is awkward.

Salem

I saw a commercial this weekend while watching March Madness. It was a Progressive insurance commercial. They were making a joke of the Salem Witch Trials, with “Flo” being burned at the steak while defending herself saying that her rates aren’t magical.

Starting in Europe and coming over with the colonists, witch hunting resulted in tens of thousands of women killed. Their killings being very public and often times tortured. Many scholars called this gendercide. Due to the control of the church, women, “witches,” were seen as inherently evil and manipulating. Essentially the men of power realized a woman’s ability to influence and became fearful of them realizing their power, so following suit with every other power on the planet, it was best to kill women who started showing signs of power. I am speaking loosely, but you all get the point. Men scared, killed LOTS of women and called them witches to justify it.

I found it interesting that a commercial like this can go on national TV with out anyone raising a brow. If there was a commercial making fun of slavery, the mass killing and rounding up of Native Americans, or the Holocaust, major uproar would be heard. I simply think it is really interesting that women are not seen as a group having a plight. This commercial raises so many questions. Why as a society and as american women do we allow such “making fun?”

Women are not a joke. We are not silly little things. We are powerful.

Bottom line: Progressive….I am not impressed. I will not in my lifetime ever be a customer of your business. Think before you barf sexist crap all over the exact audience you are trying to reach. I would love to know the number of women who purchase insurance for their families. I am willing to bet that most of your customers are women. Get. It. Together.

Progressive is not so progressive. The slogan “a dangerously progressive idea” gives the notion that being progressive in your thinking is dangerous. IRONIC and Stupid.

I have to say that the commercial does a very good job of downplaying it all and making us laugh and turn our brains off. But that is the problem. Some may say I am being dramatic, maybe I am. The mass torture and killing of women seems pretty dramatic to me.
